Before you buy your tiles-read this

When you are buying tiles there are a few factors to consider before making your final purchase.Factors such as shading, type of tile and pattern all are factors you need to pay attention to.

Firstly you need to accurately measure the area to be tiled, this is best done in square metres.Measure the area to be tiled, height and width in square metres.

Once you’ve done that, multiple the 2 figures (height x width) with gives you the total square metreage of tiles required e.g 4m x 2.7m would be 10.8 square metres.

Many tiles are designed to look like stone, emulating the rough, rugged texture of natural stone, some tiles are deliberately shaded unevenly to replicate this, this shaded effect may not suit everyone so check to see if other tiles on the box have this.

It is also important to ensure all tiles are from the same batch\lot to ensure the shaing is as accurate as possible.

If you are planning on using patterned tiles you will need to plan out more accurately where you start tiling to avoid thin cuts on adjacent walls to continue the pattern.

There are various levels of finish on tiles from matt to high gloss so you need to determine which finish level is best suited to the feel you require.

For example a modern bathroom looks slick with large, high gloss tiles,in an older home you may wish to have a near matt finish relicating the aged look.

Nest we have the purpose of the tile. For wall tiles this is not really an issue but for floor\wet room tiles it will be.

You do not want tiles which are highly slippery when wet for a bathroom floor for example. You may also want to consider underfloor heating because ,tiles, especially porcelain tiles are cold to the touch so when you have had your hot shower or bath stepping onto a frezing cold surface isn’t really an enjoyable experience.

Porcelain tiles are available in matt a finish which is less slippery than the high gloss finish.

Stone tiles for example will be more absorbent, which means they will be less slippery on floor.

Armed with this information you can make the right decision regarding what type of tiles are best suited to your purpose. It is always a good idea to ask the tile retailer their opinions however having some knowledge allows you to make an informed decision, afterall, tile shops are there to sell you tiles and they may wish to sell you a line which might not be fully suited to your needs.By using this information and asking the right questions they will be aware you have done your homework and highly unlikely to sell you the wrong tiles.
